MN TRIO Staff and TRIO Alumna Bethany Klemetsrud attended COE's 38th Annual Policy Seminar on March 11-14th in Washington DC.

MN TRIO staff and alumni attended COE's 38th Annual Policy Seminar on March 11-14, 2018 in Washington, DC. The Annual Policy Seminar affords the TRIO and GEAR UP communities from across the country the opportunity to help educate Members of the 115th Congress, congressional staff, and Trump Administration officials about the history and the success of TRIO and GEAR UP.
The Seminar also included an update from the Department of Education on their policies and provided the Trump Administration's higher education priorities.

It is MORE IMPORTANT than ever to send alumni to Washington D.C. to talk with our Congressional Representatives and tell their stories in how TRIO has helped them be successful and why TRIO WORKS!

MNTRIO Members
- Please consider nominating an alum to attend next year at the COE Policy Seminar in March 2019. Minnesota TRIO will cover the expenses if your alumni is selected to attend.

The 2018 application is closed. Please check back for 2019 application and deadline.

A new report by the Pell Institute for Opportunity in Education, “Bridging the Gaps to Success: Promising Practices for Promoting Transfer Among Low-Income and First-Generation Students", highlights the work of six Texas community colleges with higher-than-expected transfer rates among their students.

Bethany participated in Bemidji State University's Upward Bound program and was nominated by Leah Girard and Kelli Steggall to attend the 2018 Policy Seminar. Bethany returned from Policy an even stronger advocate for TRIO and relayed her TRIO experience in DC.
Bethany earned her B.S. from the University of Minnesota Duluth and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Tech. Bethany is currently an instructor of Chemical Engineering at North Dakota State University.

"My experience helping represent, advocate and support TRIO programs on the Hill was exhilarating and at a times a little exhausting (walking on marble floors in dress shoes can be painful). I am incredibly grateful for this experience to be able to go to DC and attempt to give back to a program that has given so much to me. We were able to understand how advocacy works on the Hill and what is and isn’t effective when communicating with your Representatives/Senators; all along with having a more in-depth civics lesson, which was invaluable. This knowledge will not only help me be a better TRIO advocate in the future, but also as an advocate in my community.
The real stars of this show were the countless TRIO staff who represented their institutions and congressional districts from across Minnesota and our nation. I’ve always been in awe of their dedication, resourcefulness and ability to promote student success, but seeing them behind the scenes passionately advocating for TRIO programs for their communities and current students showed me how invaluable the TRIO staff is. Coming up with a game plan, memorizing statistics and having it all disrupted by the Congressmen showing up to the meeting was exhilarating and exciting. I could not have been as effective on the Hill without all of the work that my TRIO group put in behind the scenes. From the bottom of my heart, a big thank you for all that you do. TRIO Works!"
-   Bethany Klemetsrud, TRIO Alum
