Josh Copeland’s story is one of success, failure, and perseverance. It is one that will make you laugh, cry, and make you look inside yourself to strive to be the best person you can be. He has gone from being a Division-1 athlete to someone who battled depression and alcoholism with $0.33 in the bank account and jobless to running a successful business. Now he is sharing his story and experiences to inspire and encourage his audience.

As leaders, with a vision and goals, not only for ourselves, but for our organizations and those with whom we work, setbacks can be magnified. This presentation will provide some tips on moving forward after experiencing a bump in the road.

"Leveling the Career Exploration Playing Field: 7 Weeks of Normalizing the Non-Traditional"
Identities of students as first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented minorities present various barriers to success, placing them at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts. Of note, is the lack of first-hand experience and an overwhelming learning curve faced when it comes to navigating the career planning process. Workshop attendees will be taken on a journey of reflective learning, through the design, implementation, evaluation, and tangible outcomes of the University of Iowa Upward Bound’s 2020 Summer Program Virtual Work Study - a launchpad that allowed students to critically reflect on and evaluate their choices, and to establish next steps on their career paths. Specific to the outcomes, attendees will acquire insights into: (1) project-based/personalized learning as a tool for students within a virtual setting, and (2) how understanding the process empowered students with the confidence to engage in research-driven conversations with familial support to address the dissonance around traditional career expectations.
